One of the best parts about coming home to Sugar Land, TX is getting to drive by the old Imperial Sugar mill, my town's namesake.
I practically grew up playing softball across the street from the sugar mill, with the sweet smell of burnt sugar wafting in the air during those long, summer night practices... ah, nostalgia.
When I was about 13, the sugar mill closed down, and since then the building, as prominent as it is in my town, has been abandoned.
In the past few years, there as been a lot of talk about turning the old mill into an apartment complex, lofts or some sort of town museum.
As much as I love the idea of turning the building into something useful... there's something about its old, abandoned charm that I just can't seem to get out of my head...
